MPs accuse Angie Motshekga of defying Defence Committee

Some members of the Joint Standing Committee on Defence have accused Defence and Military Veterans Minister Angie Motshekga of defiance.
This comes after she failed to pitch for a meeting on the readiness of the South African National Defence Force to be deployed to assist the police in some provinces to fight crime and gang violence on Friday morning.
Motshega was supposed to lead the Department of Defence’s delegation at the meeting.
The deployment was announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa during his State of the Nation Address last month.
Committee members say the minister is continuously absent from their meetings.
Democratic Alliance MP Christian Hattingh elaborates.
“You know, chair, what makes us even worse is that everybody in this committee predicted when we had the meeting two weeks ago that the minister would not be here. Her defiance has become predictable, and she plays exactly what is that is expected of her. Chair, this cannot be tolerated. It cannot be allowed to continue in this fashion. It’s a very serious issue if we see the correspondence that we have insight into the arrogance displayed and the disdain that explains for this committee for oversight by this minister.”
