Mpumalanga residents demand water amid Human Rights Day celebration

Residents of Lekwa in Standerton, Mpumalanga, say they have little to no reason to celebrate Human Rights Day due to a lack of water. They believe that insufficient water provision is a violation of their rights.
Some of them claim that they have been without tap water for many years now.
They also raised concerns that the water provided to them through tankers is inadequate and of poor quality.
“We do not have water to bath, the toilets are not working, and they sometimes provide us with water using tankers, but it’s dirty. They always promise that they will fix the pipes, but not much is being done. We feel oppressed”
“Because of water shortage, we can’t take a bath before going to work. And the toilets are in a bad state because there’s no adequate water”
“We have been without running water for many years now. Our water pipes have been damaged. We can’t even do laundry. So, I would say our rights are being violated. We are even discouraged from taking part of the elections especially because we don’t get what we want, which is water.”
Meanwhile some residents in Bakenberg outside Mokopane in Limpopo say they still face service delivery challenges.
The residents were speaking at the local stadium where the provincial government will celebrate Human Rights Day. They want the government to fix roads, solve water shortage and create employment for the youth.
