KCCA striker Muhammad Shaban is the 2023/24 Uganda Premier League (UPL) Golden Boot winner after recording 17 goals, four more than last season’s winner Allan Kayiwa.

Unlike last season where Kayiwa (then at Express) scored just 13 goals to emerge top scorer, this term has been more competitive.

Nelson Ssenkatuka, who scored 13 goals, and has been leading the goal-scorers’ chart for the most part of this season finished fourth on the list, behind Express’ Isaac Wagoina (14), Kitara’s Dennis Omedi (15) and KCCA’s Muhammad Shaban (17).

Maroons’ striker, Fred Amaku, who scored 10 goals to finish fourth on the top scorers’ chart last season improved to 12 goals this season, but finished fifth on the list.

Vipers captain and top scorer Milton Karisa scored nine goals to come fifth on the leading goal-scorers’ chart last season, and he managed to replicate the exact number of goals this season, but eight more players registered so many more goals than him – tying on nine with SC Villa youngster Jonah Patrick Kakande.

Shaban closely contested with four other forwards in the long race to win the UPL Golden Boot; Omedi, Wagoina Ssenkatuuka and Amaku brought about some stiff competition, but the KCCA striker did better than them all to take the prize home.

The ‘Rain-maker’, as the former Onduparaka captain is commonly referred to scored in 13 different games, against ten different teams, notching eight goals in the first round, and nine in the second round.

The KCCA sharpshooter missed out on a hat-trick for the entire season, but managed to register braces on four different occasions – against Vipers, Gaddafi, NEC and Mbarara City respectively.

Throughout the entire campaign, Shaban scored three goals against Gaddafi, two against Express, two against Vipers, two against Bright Stars, two against NEC, two against Mbarara City, and a goal each against Maroons, URA, UPDF and Wakiso Giants.
