Muslims to Commence Fasting on Wednesday

Old Kampala– The Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) has announced the sighting of the crescent moon marking the beginning of the holy month of Ramadan, with fasting set to commence on Wednesday, February 18, 2026.

In a press release issued on February 17, 2026, the council confirmed that the new moon of Ramadan had been sighted, signalling the start of the annual fasting period observed by Muslims worldwide. The council stated that Taraweeh prayers will be conducted after Isha prayers throughout the holy month.
The statement further noted that Darasas (Islamic seminars) at the National Mosque will be held every Sunday from 10:00am during Ramadan, while other mosques across the country will make their own arrangements for similar programs.
On behalf of UMSC and the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, Muslims were encouraged to observe the fasting period faithfully and were wished a successful and spiritually rewarding Ramadan. The leadership also prayed for peace, blessings, and protection for the country.
The press release was signed by Ziyad Swaleh Lubanga, Director of Sharia at UMSC.
Ramadan is one of the five pillars of Islam, during which Muslims observe fasting from dawn to sunset, engage in prayer, and perform acts of charity and reflection.
