National Rugby 7s Series Head to Jinja

The National Rugby 7s Series 2024 will make a pivotal stop in Eastern Uganda as Walukuba Barbarians prepare to host the fifth circuit at Bugembe Stadium on September 13-14, 2024.

Jinja City will be well represented with several local teams, including the Hippos, Nile Rapids, the newly introduced Kalira Simbas, Walukuba Trojans, and the Walukuba Titans.

The Trojans serve as a feeder team for the Barbarians, adding another layer of local interest.

The previous circuit, held in Gulu, saw the Heathens crowned champions after a hard-fought final against their fierce rivals, the Black Pirates, with a score of 12-5. This victory followed two prior encounters between the teams.

On the women’s side, Thunderbirds RFC secured their first title of the season with a commanding 26-7 win over the Black Pearls. This was their inaugural final appearance in the current series.

For Walukuba, this event marks their third consecutive year participating in the National Rugby 7s Series.

They first competed in 2022, when Jinja Hippos and Black Pearls emerged victorious.

Last year, the Black Pearls and Black Pirates claimed the titles in their respective categories.

The tournament promises to be highly competitive as all teams return at full strength after missing key players due to national duty at the 2024 Willem Strauss International Rugby 7s in South Africa.
