Catholics to Celebrate 2026 Year’s Martyrs Day at Parish level


Kampala– A few hours after the Government of Uganda has suspended the gathering at Namungongo on 3rd June 2026, in celebration of martyrs day as a result of Ebola outbreak, Catholics have responded to the announcement.

In the statement dated Monday 18th May 2026, by Uganda Episcopal Conference signed by Rt Rev Fr. Anthony Zziwa, the Chairperson of the conference, welcomed the decision and provided alternatives to believers.
“Although the national gathering at Namugongo has been postponed, dioceses and parishes are encouraged to celebrate the day with the guidance of the Diocesan Bishop and the relevant Government authorities.” Remarked Zziwa
He also urged all believers to join in prayers for our nation, health workers, and all those affected by the circumstances that necessitated the postponement.
“We urge you all to follow the guidelines given by the Government and the Ministry of Health. We call upon media institutions to provide adequate coverage of the Ebola pandemic.”
However, on the other hand, Rev. Fr. Zziwa asked all Christians to remain calm, prayerful,united, and hopeful.
On Sunday, the Government through President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, postponed this year’s Martyrs day celebrations to protect believers against Ebola Outbreak.
