Munyonyo– Hundreds of people gathered on Friday at Speke Resort Munyonyo for the 8th Kagezi Memorial Lecture, where they praised her for remarkable performance during the time She spent as a Prosecutor in the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni (Chief Guest) in his message delivered by the Chief Justice Dr.Flavian Zeija, Museveni described Kagezi as a Patriot who defended the society against criminals, terrorists, corrupt actors, and enemies of peace.
“When prosecutors stand firm against terrorism, organized crime, corruption, money laundering, human trafficking, and impunity, they are not merely enforcing the law. They are defending Uganda itself. That is why criminals feared Joan Kagezi. Criminals believed they could intimidate the criminal justice system through violence and fear.”
That, it is if for the above reasons that Criminals feared her to the extent of eliminating her with a view of creating fear in the justice system, but instead it was strengthened.
Museveni therefore commended all the Officers and Prosecutors behind investigations as well as trial of the suspects in the Kagezi murder were some tangible results have been witnessed.
“Criminal investigations are not like fiction. You do not wake up and manufacture evidence. Serious investigations require public cooperation, intelligence, patience, professionalism, and persistence. Eventually, the truth comes out.” Museveni added
The Principal Judge, Lady Justice Frances Abodo, the Keynote Speaker emphasized that hardworking/Professional Prosecution helps in promoting peace and security with in the country, as building investor confidence, thus improving the economy.
“Crimes such as corruption, terrorism financing and financial crimes drain the national budget although we don’t see it, they deter investors and affect the social contract between government and the citizens. Investors always do a calculation on a number factors before investing in any country on issues like; if someone steals from my business , will he/she be prosecuted and punished once evidence pins him, and many other factors.” Remarked Abodo
She also prayed to the current Director of Public Prosecutions, to look putting in place an initiative aimed at supporting all the retired Prosecutors.
Mr. Lino Anguzu, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) thanked the President for the support he has always extended to the office of the DPP including support to their staff Sacco, salary increment and being exempted from taxes on their salaries.
He however called upon the Government to give them more support so that they can be able to recruit more prosecutors in some areas where they are none, to support Judiciary in eliminating delayed case hearing and case backlog.
Phillip Kagezi, the son of the late Joan Kagezi, in his remarks, stated that Justice is not Separate from development but rather a foundation upon which development stands.
“A trust worthy justice system creates a confidence that allows business to flourish and citizens to believe once again in the promise of their motherland.”
The event attracted participants from all walks of life in the legal fraternity, Government MDAs and Civil Society.
