Masaza Cup: Ssenyondo Robert Eyes Masaza Cup Glory After Three-Year Absence | Voice of Bugerere

After three years away from the prestigious Buganda Masaza Cup, Ssenyondo Robert has returned with renewed determination, hoping to write another memorable chapter in his football journey with Kyadondo Ssaza.
The experienced midfielder last featured in the competition in 2023, a season that ended on a high note for Busiro Ssaza as they lifted their historic first Masaza Cup title after defeating Buddu in the final. However, Ssenyondo’s personal campaign was cut short after suffering an injury during the group stages, a setback that kept him away from the tournament and nearly forced him to quit football altogether.
Reflecting on the difficult period, Ssenyondo admitted that watching his peers progress while he battled setbacks was one of the toughest moments of his career.
“The time I have spent away from this tournament has not been easy. Many of my friends whom we shared similar dreams with have gone ahead to graduate into FUFA Big League clubs, Uganda Premier League teams, and even professional clubs abroad. For me, I experienced setbacks that slowed down my progress and almost made me leave football,” he said.
Despite the challenges, Ssenyondo never gave up on his dream. This season, Kyadondo Ssaza handed him a second chance, and he is determined to make the most of it.
“I am grateful to the coaches and the technical team for trusting me again. Being given another opportunity to compete at this level means a lot to me. I want to repay that trust through hard work and performance on the pitch.”
Ssenyondo acknowledged that the competition has changed significantly since his last appearance, with many new and talented players now making their mark in the tournament.
“On my return, I have found a lot of new blood in the competition. The players I used to compete against have largely moved on, and the new generation is making things much more competitive. It is a different challenge, but one that I am ready for.”
Although delighted to be back, Ssenyondo insists that he has not returned merely to participate.
“I have not returned to stay here for long. I have come back with a mission. I want to work hard, help guide Kyadondo to the final, and ultimately win the trophy.”
Proven Masaza Cup Experience
Ssenyondo is among the few players who have consistently helped their teams reach the latter stages of the Masaza Cup.
His record includes:
2017 – Reached the semi-finals with Busiro before losing to Ssingo.2018 – Busiro failed to progress beyond the group stages.2019 – Busiro reached the final but lost 1-0 to Bulemeezi.2023 – Part of the Busiro squad that won its historic first Masaza Cup title after defeating Buddu, although injury ruled him out after the group stages.
His wealth of experience is expected to be a valuable asset for Kyadondo as they seek success this season.
Strong Start for Kyadondo
Ssenyondo played the entire 90 minutes during Kyadondo’s opening match of the 2026 Masaza Cup campaign against defending champions Buweekula. The tightly contested encounter ended in a goalless draw at the NTC Playground in Mubende.
Despite playing away from home, Kyadondo enjoyed massive support from their fans, something that impressed the experienced midfielder.

“I would like to thank the supporters of Kyadondo for turning up in large numbers to support us away in Buweekula. Your support motivates us, and we shall work hard to pay them back by competing strongly for the championship.”
Club Leadership and Current Form
Away from Masaza football, Ssenyondo enjoyed an impressive 2025/26 season as captain of Busoga United FC. Under his leadership, the club finished second in the Eastern Regional League, behind champions Amus College FC.
His leadership qualities and experience are expected to play a key role in Kyadondo’s ambitions this season.
The Road Ahead

Now, with Kyadondo colours on his chest and unfinished business in the Masaza Cup, Ssenyondo is determined to make his second chance count.
