Rt. Rev. Dr. Anthony Zziwa Elected New Chairperson Inter Religious Council of Uganda


The Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU) in its meeting held on 23rd June 2026, elected Rt. Rev. Dr. Anthony Joseph Zziwa, the Catholic Bishop of Kiyinda-Mityana Diocese and Chairperson of the Uganda Episcopal Conference, as its new chairperson for the 2026–2029 term.

The election was unanimously reached during the IRCU Council of Presidents’ meeting held ushering in a new leadership term for one of Uganda’s leading interfaith organisations.
Bishop Zziwa takes over from The Most Rev. Dr. Stephen Samuel Kaziimba Mugalu, the Archbishop of the Church of Uganda, whose tenure as Chairperson of the IRCU Council of Presidents has come to an end.
In a statement, the Council commended Archbishop Kaziimba for his leadership, stewardship, and commitment during his term of office.
The Council also congratulated Bishop Zziwa upon his election, expressing confidence in his ability to continue advancing IRCU’s mission of promoting interfaith cooperation, peacebuilding, and national cohesion.
Various Religions were represented by their top Administration , well as the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC), a member of IRCU, was represented at the meeting by His Eminence Sheikh Muhammad Ali Waiswa, the Deputy Mufti, who stood in for His Eminence Dr. Sheikh Shaban Ramadhan Mubaje, the Mufti of Uganda and President of the IRCU Council of Presidents, who is currently attending an International Conference in Mombasa, Kenya.
