BY kWERONDA ABROSEIN KIGEZIThe Bishop of North Kigezi Diocese, Rt. Rev. Onesmas Asiimwe aka Auncle O, has urged the judiciary to expedite the case of Dr. Kizza Besigye, who has been in prison since November 2024 without being released.
The Bishop made the remarks today during the second day of the Youth and Students Convention taking place at the convention site on Rugarama Hill in Northern Division, Kabale Municipality.
The convention, which has attracted thousands of youths from across the diocese, officially opened yesterday and will run until Monday next week under the theme, “Anchored in Christ for Unity, Stability and Peace,” drawn from Ephesians 2:14–17.
Bishop Asiimwe emphasized the need for the judiciary to fast-track the hearing of Dr. Besigye’s case and deliver a ruling promptly.
He further stated that the court should either release Dr. Besigye or formally process his detention in accordance with the law. He added that he visited Luzira Maximum Security Prison last week to check on Dr. Besigye, since the prison falls within the Diocese of Kigezi.
The Bishop noted that Dr. Besigye has been in custody for one and a half years on allegations of treason, yet his case remains unresolved.
Dr. Kizza Besigye was allegedly abducted and arrested in Nairobi, Kenya, on November 16, 2024. He was subsequently transferred to Uganda, where he appeared before a military court in Kampala on November 20, 2024, charged with security-related offences and remanded to Luzira Maximum Security Prison.
While preaching, the Bishop urged the youth to receive the blood of Jesus Christ. He said that after accepting Jesus Christ, they would hear His voice and should not hide themselves from God, because He wants to be with them. He encouraged them to repent and accept Jesus Christ before returning to their homes.
