Francis Lukooya Mukoome, has officially launched road maintenance and rehabilitation works in Ntunda Sub-county, commissioning the improvement of Namukupa Road and other key community access roads as part of his First 100 Days Service Drive.

The initiative is expected to see the rehabilitation and maintenance of more than 35 kilometres of roads across Ntunda Sub-county, aimed at improving transportation, boosting agricultural productivity, and enhancing service delivery.
The commissioning ceremony brought together members of the District Executive Committee, technical officers from the Works Department, representatives from the Office of the Chief Administrative Officer, local leaders, and residents.
Welcoming the district leadership, the LC I Chairperson of the area, Mr. Robert Lutaaya, thanked Mukono District for prioritizing Ntunda in the road improvement programme. He noted that poor road conditions have for many years hindered transportation and economic activities, expressing optimism that the road works would improve mobility and open up new opportunities for residents.
Representing the Sub-county Chief, Mr. Abdul Kalibbala, the Production Officer, congratulated Hon. Lukooya and his executive team upon their election victory and appealed for continued support towards improving other critical roads within the sub-county. He highlighted roads such as Bbalanga–Ogutu, Wabbusolo–Namugongo, Kateete–Byakatonda, Mawejje–Kalagala, and Mukiibi–Ssemukuuto, which require urgent attention to facilitate community development and trade.
Local leaders emphasized that improved road infrastructure is essential for economic transformation, particularly in an agricultural area like Ntunda where farmers rely heavily on roads to transport produce to markets. They also raised concerns about inadequate road construction equipment and requested additional support to accelerate implementation.
Ntunda Sub-county Chairperson, Hon. Philemon Sinziira, welcomed the district team and praised the leadership for prioritizing road infrastructure in the area. He encouraged residents to actively participate in government programmes and meetings to remain informed about development initiatives and opportunities.
Hon. Sinziira further appealed to the district leadership to ensure that all planned road works are completed before equipment is moved to other areas and called for increased fuel allocations to support maintenance activities. He also highlighted the challenge of understaffing, which continues to affect service delivery within the sub-county.
The area District Councillor, Hon. Jane Sanyu, thanked Hon. Lukooya for his commitment to improving infrastructure and described the road rehabilitation programme as a major step towards transforming Ntunda Sub-county.
Representing the Chief Administrative Officer, Mr. Henry Ddamba, the District Communications Officer, Mr Kaddu Derrick Mbojjana, informed residents that Ntunda had for a long time suffered from poor road infrastructure, affecting economic growth and service delivery. He explained that the district leadership had prioritized the area to improve connectivity and facilitate movement of people and goods.
He noted that the roads under rehabilitation are strategically important because they connect Mukono District to neighbouring districts, particularly Kayunga, and serve as key routes for agricultural trade and transportation.
Mukono District Engineer, Eng. Herbert Lutwama, explained that Namukupa Road has evolved into an important transport corridor linking Ntunda Sub-county to Kangulumira in Kayunga District, thereby strengthening connectivity between Mukono, Kayunga, Buikwe, and Jinja districts.
He revealed that the district plans to rehabilitate approximately 35 kilometres of roads in Ntunda, including key routes such as Kyabazaala–Kikoome and Ntooto–Walubira roads. Eng. Lutwama also appealed to residents to protect drainage systems and avoid activities that could damage road infrastructure.
The Woman District Councilor for Kimenyedde Sub county and also Secretary for Works, Hon. Winfred Nakaddu, commended Hon. Lukooya for fulfilling his commitment to improving road infrastructure within his first 100 days in office. She observed that better roads would significantly reduce transportation costs, improve access to markets, and increase incomes for farmers.
Hon. Nakaddu encouraged residents to support regular road maintenance through community road gangs, noting that the programme would not only preserve infrastructure but also create employment opportunities for local youth.
While commissioning the road works, Hon. Francis Lukooya Mukoome applauded the Ntunda technical team and local leaders for their commitment to service delivery and pledged to ensure that all 35 kilometres of planned road works are completed within the set timeframe.
He urged young people to take advantage of employment opportunities created through road maintenance activities and promised monthly allowances for those engaged in road gangs.
The District Chairperson emphasized that Ntunda remains one of Mukono District’s key agricultural production areas and therefore requires reliable road infrastructure to facilitate movement of agricultural produce and improve access to markets.
In addition to road development, Hon. Lukooya pledged to support farmers through the introduction of agricultural value-addition machinery and encouraged farmers to form groups to benefit from government programmes such as tractor support under the Ministry of Agriculture.
The Chairperson also issued a stern warning to public servants who fail to meet expected service delivery standards. He cautioned head teachers against sending learners home over school dues and warned health workers against charging patients for services in government health facilities.
He reaffirmed his commitment to strengthening public services by advocating for the recruitment of additional health workers and supporting the upgrading of health facilities across the district.
The launch of road maintenance and rehabilitation works in Ntunda Sub-county marks a significant milestone in Mukono District’s efforts to improve infrastructure, strengthen service delivery, and promote socio-economic development. The planned rehabilitation of over 35 kilometres of roads is expected to enhance connectivity, ease transportation of agricultural produce, create employment opportunities, and improve access to essential services.
District leaders called upon residents to support the programme, protect public infrastructure, and actively participate in government development initiatives. With improved roads, strengthened agricultural support, and a renewed focus on accountability in public service, Mukono District continues to advance its vision of sustainable development and improved livelihoods for all residents.

Source link

Mukono District Chairperson, Hon.
