Akampamya’s death has sent shockwaves through Kiruhura District, the military community and among comrades who served alongside him during some of Uganda’s most challenging military campaigns.Tributes poured in from fellow soldiers, friends and relatives, many describing him as a patriotic officer who served his country with courage and distinction.A colleague who trained with him during the UPDF General Recruitment of 2001 recalled their journey through the 17th Intake at Bihanga Training School before they were deployed in military operations.“We have lost a patriotic officer,” the grieving colleague said.Capt. Akampamya was among the soldiers who participated in the historic Operation Iron Fist, the major UPDF offensive launched in 2002 against the Lord’s Resistance Army rebels led by Joseph Kony.Fellow soldiers remember him not only as a brave fighter but also as a talented composer who created songs celebrating the sacrifices, resilience and victories of soldiers involved in Operation Iron Fist.
