\nMany know him as Kyuma Kya Yesu, which means \u201cThe Tool of Jesus\u201d in Luganda, and Mr. Lubwama has always been known for his toughness. His life has been shaped by political pressure, arrests, and being forced to leave the country sometimes, but he\u2019s always stayed focused on his purpose.
\nFrom Journalism to Activism
\nMr. Lubwama started his career as a journalist, reporting on riots, civil unrest, and social justice issues all over Uganda. Being in those situations showed him what life was really like, unlike what many others only heard about from afar.
\n\u201cWilliam isn\u2019t someone who just read about Uganda; he lived it firsthand on the streets, with everyday people struggling,\u201d Moses Mubiru said. \u201cThat\u2019s why his activism feels so real. It comes from what he\u2019s actually experienced, not just theories.\u201d
\nOver time, what he saw turned into him getting actively involved. After repeatedly dealing with security forces, even getting harassed while doing his job, he decided to take a more direct role in pushing for accountability.
\nA Defining Public Moment
\nIn 2017, Mr. Lubwama became widely known after he confronted then-Member of Parliament Simeo Nsubuga at a public event in Mubende. This happened during the opposition against removing the presidential age limit.
\nIt was a moment that got a lot of different reactions but definitely grabbed the country\u2019s attention.
\n\u201cTo understand what happened, you have to get the frustration behind it,\u201d Mr. Mubiru explained. \u201cMany Ugandans felt like no one was listening to them. William did something that made the country pay attention.\u201d
\nThat moment really cemented his place in Uganda\u2019s political discussions and connected him more closely with resistance movements.<\/p>\n
Faith and Conviction
\nMr. Lubwama\u2019s activism isn\u2019t just political; it\u2019s also very personal and, for many, rooted in his faith. At Milliken Wesleyan Methodist Church, where Ugandans living abroad gather, his story is often told through the idea of purpose.
\n\u201cWilliam\u2019s journey is all about purpose,\u201d Eddy Jjumba said. \u201cYou see a man who believes he\u2019s meant to stand up for the truth, even when it costs him a lot personally. That kind of unwavering belief is rare.\u201d
\nPastor Jjumba pointed out that the name Kyuma Kya Yesu means more than just a symbol; it talks about believing in service and sacrifice.
\n\u201cWhen someone takes on that identity, it means they see themselves as a tool for something bigger. For William, that bigger purpose has always been Uganda.\u201d
\nMr. Lubwama\u2019s alignment with the National Unity Platform and his support for Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu firmly positioned him within Uganda\u2019s opposition landscape.
\nHis involvement extended beyond public endorsement. He became an integral part of the movement\u2019s structure and visibility, contributing significantly to its grassroots engagement.
\nThis commitment, however, came with consequences. Arrests, detentions, and periods spent in Kitalya Prison became part of his lived experience.
