\nMalaysia\u2019s deputy religious affairs minister has urged citizens to use the phrase \u201cdeviant culture\u201d instead of LGBTQ+, in a move critics say risks erasing references to the community.
\nReligious affairs minister\u00a0Marhamah Rosli introduced the suggestion as a way to prevent the term \u201cLGBT\u201d from spreading through social media algorithms.<\/p>\n
In Malaysia, same-sex sexual relations are illegal, and the law also criminalises forms of gender expression by transgender people. Those found guilty under anti-LGBTQ+ laws can face penalties including imprisonment and physical punishment.<\/p>\n
On (26 February), Rosli stated in the Dewan Negara, the upper house of the Parliament of Malaysia: \u201cThe more we utter, write and mention the term \u2018LGBT\u2019, the more related content will pop up. Unknowingly, we may appear to be promoting the deviant culture.\u201d<\/p>\n
She added that the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia is continuously monitoring social media content related to the LGBTQ+ community.<\/p>\n
Rosli cited the example of \u201cGlamping with Pride\u201d, referring to a January retreat planned by the pro-LGBTQ advocacy group Jejaka, which was forced to cancel, citing safety concerns.<\/p>\n
Since the 2018 election, a crackdown on the LGBTQ+ community has been underway, with several reports of arrests, prosecutions, and the imposition of corporal punishment.<\/p>\n
Under prime minister Anwar Ibrahim, Malaysia has maintained a strict stance against LGBTQ+ rights. Same-sex marriage is not legally recognised in Malaysia, and similar unions are considered void.<\/p>\n
As per Malaysian news outlet\u00a0Malaysiakini, legal commentators have argued that any attempt to formally classify citizens as \u201cdeviant\u201d could conflict with Article 8(1) of Malaysia\u2019s federal constitution, which guarantees equality before the law.<\/p>\n

\n[Suhakam] views with serious concern recent remarks made by MPs which have denigrated certain groups of individuals through unfounded and scientifically unsubstantiated claims, including characterising persons of diverse sexual identity and sexual orientation as deviant cults and suggesting that work-related stress may contribute to an individual\u2019s sexual identity or sexual orientation.

Suhakam considers such statements to be inappropriate, misleading and unethical. The propagation of harmful stereotypes and misinformation risks deepening prejudice and normalising discrimination. It may ultimately expose affected individuals to stigma, harm and threats to their safety and wellbeing.<\/p>\n
It is unbecoming of MPs representing the people, or holders of important positions in the cabinet to continue to spew toxic language in the legislative house. Parliament must remain a forum of principled debate, guided by respect for human dignity and constitutional values.<\/p>\n
Suhakam emphasises that all individuals, regardless of their sexual identity or sexual orientation, are entitled to be treated with dignity and respect.<\/p>\n
Fundamental liberties are the cornerstone of Malaysia\u2019s constitutional framework.<\/p>\n
Article 5 of the Federal Constitution provides for the right to personal liberty, while Article 8 guarantees equality before the law and equal protection of the law.<\/p>\n
