The National Home Builders Registration Council says the lack of compliance with technical norms and standards in construction could endanger people’s lives.
The council’s primary mandate is to ensure that builders comply with prescribed technical and ethical standards, prevent substandard construction, and provide warranty protection for new homes.
The country has seen the recurrence of collapsed buildings recently, claiming dozens of lives.
Nine construction workers died last week Monday after a concrete slab collapsed at a construction site in Ormonde in Johannesburg.
NHBRC Acting CEO Tamlyn Bouwer says, “It’s really awareness. It’s so vitally important that consumers out there are aware of these norms and standards and the measures that are in place to protect against this. For example, if you are looking to construct a new home and you are looking at builders, ensure that those builders are registered with the National Home Builders Registration Council. Every registered builder, we provide them with a registration certificate that is valid for one year. So that should be your starting point. Because it’s that process that then kicks off all of these regulatory inspections.”
