Greek businessman and former police reservist member of the Cato Manor Organised Crime Unit, Ari Danikas, has testified that former KwaZulu-Natal Hawks head, Major General Johan Booysen allegedly tampered with evidence at crime scenes to derail investigations by the police watchdog, IPID.
Danikas told the Nkabinde Enquiry that members of the unit frequently used excessive force while effecting arrests, resulting in the deaths of several alleged black suspects.
He has wrapped up his virtual testimony from Athens in Greece.
He made the allegations during cross-examination by evidence leader, Advocate Thembeka Nqcukaitobi.
Danikas: Booysen says, ‘Harry, go around the scene and pick up all two big, large cartridges. There’s only the long one cartridge of the rifle.’ Police issue rifle, which is the R5, and ‘hand them over to Morris Mostert and Olivier in front of you’.
Advocate Nqcukaitobi: But what is the point of General Booysen instructing the members, including yourself, to remove cartridges from the scene?
Danikas: It’s the fact that they use excessive force, they use automatic machine guns based on the position of the first suspect, who was dead, trapped in a car. I believe that they were executed, and I believe that they used maximum force to shoot to kill. So, the IPID who comes afterwards doesn’t see any wrongdoing with the members of the police force.
