The National Resistance Movement (NRM) flag bearer, Denis Nzeirwe Ndyomugyenyi, has been declared the winner of the Kabale District LC5 Chairperson race, defeating the incumbent, Nelson Nshangabasheija, who was running as an independent candidate.
While announcing the results, the District Returning Officer, Ms. Aisha Nansubuga, said Ndyomugyenyi emerged victorious after polling 44,511 votes, representing 60.26 percent, while Nshangabasheija came second with 27,586 votes, representing 37.35 percent.
The race also featured two other independent candidates. Stephen Jack Habimana Rupiha garnered 1,280 votes representing 1.73 percent, while Donozio Banga Owomugisha obtained 489 votes representing 0.66 percent.
Nelson Nshangabasheija, who served only one term as LC5 Chairperson, had earlier defeated the late Patrick Besigye Keihwa and the current winner, Denis Nzeirwe Ndyomugyenyi, to clinch the seat.
However, during the recent NRM party primaries, Nshangabasheija lost to Ndyomugyenyi and later returned to the race as an independent candidate—a move that did not yield victory.
Meanwhile in Rubanda District, Ampaire Stephen Kasyaba, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, was also declared winner of the Rubanda District LC5 Chairperson election after defeating Julius Twinomujuni Buzaare, an independent candidate.
The results were declared at Rubanda District Rukiko Hall at 11:45 p.m. by the District Returning Officer, Medard Nteziyaremye. Kasyaba garnered 55,318 votes, representing 74.36 percent, while Julius Twinomujuni Buzaare obtained 19,079 votes, representing 25.64 percent.
Speaking to our reporter after the declaration, Kasyaba thanked the people of Rubanda District for entrusting him with a second term in office, saying the victory reflected his performance during his first term as district chairperson.
Kasyaba pledged to continue implementing government programmes over the next five years, with emphasis on improving infrastructure where it remains inadequate. He also called on his former rivals to work together and share ideas aimed at the development of Rubanda District
In Rukiga District, Mutebi Simon, the National Resistance Movement (NRM) candidate, was declared winner of the Rukiga District LC5 Chairperson race after defeating Kwarikunda Micheal, an independent candidate.
The results were announced at Rwamucucu Sub-county Hall by the District Returning Officer, Rebecca Mbabazi. Simon polled 21,028 votes, while Kwarikunda Micheal obtained 17,878 votes.
