Bongani Ntanzi, accused number two in the trial of former Bafana Bafana captain Senzo Meyiwa, has refused to be drawn into the testimony of the state’s key witness, Constable Zungu.
Constable Zungu placed him in Vosloorus on the day Meyiwa was shot and killed while at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s parental home in Vosloorus on Gauteng’s East Rand, in October 2014.
On the day of the alleged contract killing, a key state witness, Constable Sizwe Zungu, placed all five accused on trial at the nearby hostel.
Zungu testified that all five accused were at a hostel in Vosloorus, drinking, dancing and having a good time.
The constable mentioned he knew the accused from KwaZulu-Natal, with some people being his relatives.
State prosecutor advocate George Baloyi questioned Ntanzi about his family ties to Constable Zungu.
Baloyi: “Your evidence is that you don’t know Constable Zungu, is it correct?”
Ntanzi: “Yes, my lord.”
Baloyi: “He says his grandmother is from the Ntanzi family. Do you have any comments?”
Ntanzi: “I would not deny what he says that he has a grandmother from dad’s family, because I don’t know that grandmother of his. Even a grandfather who gave birth to my father. I don’t even know them.”
Constable Zungu also alleged that the accused left the festivities, only to return swiftly to the Basotho hostel on the evening of the murder.
This is when Zungu saw a firearm and alleged Ntanzi was wearing a hooded sweater, as described by some eyewitnesses who were inside the Khumalo home that fateful night.
However, Ntanzi disputes this evidence.
Ntanzi: “My lord, I do not know Zungu. I first got to know him when he came in to testify in this court…and what the prosecution alleges that I went to intrude in Khumalo’s house, I don’t even know the Khumalo house.”
Baloyi: “But is it not interesting that Constable Zungu, who was at the hostel, says, you did not have a firearm, and the witnesses who were in the house also say that you did not have a firearm?”
Ntanzi: “It’s because it’s not the truth. I was never in the presence of Zungu in 2014. I first saw Zungu right here in court.”
Ntanzi is expected back on the stand on Wednesday morning.
