Uganda’s Stella Chesang delivered a remarkable performance in the Women’s Marathon at the Paris Olympics, despite finishing outside the medal brackets.

Chesang came 8th with a time of 2:26:01.

Chesang, a 2018 Commonwealth Games 10,000m gold medallist, kept pace with the leaders until the 30km mark, when she was eventually dropped.

Fellow Ugandans Rebecca Cheptegei and Mercyline Chelangat finished 44th and 69th respectively, with times of 2:32:14 and 2:39:40 in that order.

The race was won by Sifan Hassan, who took Gold with a thrilling kick in 2:22:55 to fend off resistance from Tigst Assefa of Ethiopia.

Tigst and Hellen Obiri (Kenya) secured Silver and Bronze medals respectively.

It’s strong to note that Chesang is wife to Kenya’s Athlete Ronald Kwemoi – The two met at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games.

The couple married in 2018 and welcomed a child in 2020. Kwemoi himself made headlines in Paris, winning Silver in the 5000m event.

Uganda finish the games with two medals – Joshua Cheptegei’s gold in Men’s 10,000m and Peruth Chemutai’s Silver in Women’s 3000m Steeplechase
