Orlando Pirates reclaim top spot with win over Richards Bay – SABC News

Orlando Pirates returned to the top of the Betway Premiership after a hard-fought 2-0 victory over Richards Bay at the Orlando Amstel Arena in Soweto on Wednesday evening.
The result keeps the Buccaneers level on points with Mamelodi Sundowns, but they edge ahead thanks to a superior goal difference.
Pirates, chasing the league title, fielded a full-strength lineup, boosted by the return of Kamogelo Sebelebele from suspension.
The hosts immediately imposed their tempo, with Sipho Chaine orchestrating play and Thalente Mbatha testing goalkeeper Ian Otieno from distance early in the game.
Deon Hotto also came close from a free-kick in the 10th minute, forcing Otieno into another smart save.
The breakthrough came in the 26th minute.
Sebelebele’s skilful run to the byline allowed her to deliver a precise cutback for Oswin Appollis, who tapped home his fourth league goal of the season.
Pirates maintained control for much of the first half, while Richards Bay adopted a compact defensive setup, looking for counterattack opportunities that were largely contained by the Buccaneers’ structured play.
After the break, Richards Bay managed to stifle Pirates’ big chances, but the hosts continued to press for a second goal.
Relebohile Mofokeng came close in the 82nd minute, only for his effort to be tipped onto the crossbar by Otieno.
The visitors also threatened sporadically, with Yanela Mbuthuma and Thulani Gumede testing the Pirates’ defence, but were unable to convert.
The match’s final drama came in stoppage time. Tshepang Moremi was fouled in the box, and Evidence Makgopa calmly dispatched the resulting penalty to secure the 2-0 win, sending Pirates back to the top of the table.
With the victory, Orlando Pirates have now recorded three consecutive league wins and remain firmly in the title race. Richards Bay, meanwhile, dropped to 10th on the log with 23 points, struggling to string together consistent results in recent weeks.
Looking ahead, Orlando Pirates will host Siwelele at the Orlando Amstel Arena on Saturday, while Richards Bay face a provincial derby against AmaZulu at the Moses Mabhida Stadium.
