Parliament’s Joint Standing Committee on Financial Management has concluded that the appointment and remuneration of Secretary to Parliament, Xolile George, followed proper procedures.
George earns a total annual package of approximately four-point-four million rand, which has sparked controversy for exceeding President Cyril Ramaphosa’s salary.
Despite concerns, an audit by the Auditor-General confirmed that no irregularities occurred in the appointment or salary determination process.
The Acting co-chairperson of the Joint Standing Committee on the Financial Management of Parliament is Cameron Dugmore, says, “The recruitment and appointment process and context relating to the salary offered and the subsequent salary adjustments, they found that there were no irregularities. So all of those factors have been presented”.
Dugmore says “even though certain members of the committee knew that parliament committee was going to get this information, they proceeded to say all manner of things in the public domain, such as that Mr George increased his own salary and that there was corruption involved, and essentially attacking the integrity. Members can also make comments to understand the impact of false and untruthful commentary.”
