Kituuma says that on July 25, 2024, Police in Rukungiri Municipality conducted an intelligence-led operation in response to the increasing vehicle number plates’ theft.

“The operation led to the arrest of suspects (Mujuni Brian and Arinaitwe Anthony) and recovery of a number of the following stolen vehicle number plates. He has also assured that the operation is ongoing and that it is intended to combat this trend. Kituuma advised the car owners to use vehicle tracking devices and fleet monitoring systems.

Police also warned mechanics and dealers who facilitate these crimes that very soon they will be going for them.
Theft of motor vehicle number plates has been in place for decades where the suspects leave behind papers on which they write their phone contacts registered on mobile money demanding for given sums of money from the victims.
They are therefore supposed to first deposit the said money before they are given directions to places where their number plates are hidden just in case they want to have them recovered.
Police have been in position to track some of the suspects, have them arrested and charged in courts of law.
