The Police in Busoga North region have issued a statement explaining the day’s running battles with National Unity Platform (NUP) Principal Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu together with his supporters.
Mike Kasadha, the Busoga North region Police spokesperson has confirmed arrest of 10 NUP supporters who were among the team that went on to organize NUP political activity in Kamuli district, the event which Police had stopped.
Kasadha says the suspects are facing a number of charges, inciting violence being among those.

“We had prior credible intelligence that the NUP members had planned a moblisation tour today the May 22, 2024 in Kamuli municipality. As they were waiting for the expected guests, a group of people attempted to carry out illegal demonstrations which prompted us to disperse them and eventually arrested the 10 suspects which restored order,” he says.
He adds: “It should be noted that last year, the NUP mobilisation activities were suspended over non-adherence to the set guidelines, that led to public disorder, traffic disruption, loss of business, malicious damage to property, and dangerous driving causing death and injuries, among others.

As the NUP leadership defiantly went on moblising and leading processions on the way to Kamuli, their leader, Robert Kyagulanyi, Joel Ssenyonyi, the Leader of Opposition in Parliament, Shamim Malende, the Kampala Woman Member of parliament and a rowdy disorderly crowd were intercepted and dispersed proportionately between the boarder of Kamuli and Jinja district before they turned and went back.
The suspension of mobilisation activities, continues until when the NUP leadership comply with the police guidelines.

We commend the members of the public who stood in solidarity for peace and non-violent behavior associated with some political actors.”
In a number of tweets by Kyagulanyi, he has highlighted his dismay to Uganda Police and the UPDF for having violently treated his team whereby a number of them were arrested, assaulted in a number of ways as police fired live bullets and teargas with intentions of dispersing them.

“Our people have thus far braved incredible intimidation, teargas and the sound of live bullets to receive us warmly in their thousands as we head to Kamuli. We started our journey early morning but they’ve been waiting for us at every stop. THANK YOU VERY MUCH. THIS IS A REVOLUTION!” writes Kyagulanyi on his X handle.
