Police in Najeera rescued a 27-year-old businesswoman after boda boda robbers attempted to steal Shs21 million she had withdrawn from a bank in Ntinda.
The victim, identified as Nakawome Deborah, had withdrawn the money and hired a boda boda to return to her home in Buwaate. When they reached Najeera, a few metres from the police station opposite Stabex, another motorcycle approached at high speed. The passenger on the motorcycle grabbed her bag and attempted to flee.
Nakawome raised an alarm, prompting nearby police officers to respond immediately.
Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson Luke Owoyesigyire said one suspect, Agaba Hussain, 27, was arrested with the bag he had snatched from the victim. The bag still contained the full Shs21 million.
Owoyesigyire added that the motorcycle rider managed to escape because heavy traffic made it unsafe for officers to pursue him at high speed.
The suspect is currently detained at Najjera Police Station as investigations continue, and efforts are underway to arrest the accomplice.
Police have also urged members of the business community to avoid moving with large sums of money and instead seek security assistance when transporting cash.
