Police Intensify Crackdown on Motorcycle Theft Network

Crime intelligence officers, working jointly with sister security agencies, have intensified operations against a motorcycle theft network operating under Nsangi Police Division in Wakiso District.

The ongoing nationwide crackdown follows a surge in incidents captured on CCTV footage, showing boda boda riders being attacked and robbed of their motorcycles by organised gangs moving on motorcycles and armed with machetes.

In Kampala Metropolitan South, operations are concentrated in various parts of Wakiso District, including Makindye Ssabagabo, Kajjansi, Kyengera Town Council, and surrounding areas.

According to Luke Owoyesigyire, the Kampala Metropolitan Deputy Police Spokesperson, on March 2, 2026, police conducted an intelligence-led operation in Kigwanya Cell, Nabbingo Parish, Kyengera Town Council, Wakiso District. The operation followed actionable information linking a suspect to the robbery of a motorcycle from Arua District.

During the operation, the prime suspect, Kabogoza Kefa alias Kivumbi, a 22-year-old mechanic and resident of Kigwanya Cell, was arrested. He is alleged to have robbed a red Bajaj Boxer motorcycle, registration number UFU 119N, on February 27, 2026, at about 1:00 p.m. from an unidentified victim believed to be a resident of Saziro Village in Arua District.

Investigations indicate that the suspect transported the stolen motorcycle to Nsangi. Further inquiries reveal that on March 1, 2026, at about 7:00 p.m., he allegedly delivered the motorcycle to a garage known as “Younger’s Garage” in Buwali Village near Emma Oil Petrol Station in Nsangi, with the intention of altering the engine and registration details to conceal its identity.

A team of officers from Nabbingo Police Station proceeded to the garage and recovered the following exhibits:

The recovery of additional motorcycle parts and another motorcycle points to an organised racket involved in dismantling and altering stolen motorcycles for resale.

Three suspects have been arrested in connection with the case:

Police have recorded statements from relevant witnesses and suspects, taken photographs of the scene and exhibits, and secured the recovered items pending forensic examination. Partial interviews have been conducted, and investigations are ongoing to identify additional accomplices, trace the rightful owners of the recovered motorcycles, and ensure appropriate charges are brought before the courts of law.

“We reaffirm our commitment to dismantling organised criminal networks and urge members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station,” said Owoyesigyire.
