Police in Kyankwanzi District have launched a manhunt for Maganda Isaac, a charcoal broker accused of attacking a businesswoman and fleeing with an unspecified amount of cash.
According to police, Maganda allegedly brokered forest trees for charcoal burning at Ranch Number 5 in Kyankwanzi Sub-county. The yet-to-be-identified businesswoman reportedly paid for the trees and deployed her workers to begin charcoal burning at the site.
On Saturday night, close to midnight, the businesswoman went to the site to pay her workers and alerted Maganda that she would be arriving.
Lameck Kigozi, the Wamala Region Police spokesperson, said the suspect is a resident of Lubiri in Kyankwanzi Sub-county, Kyankwanzi District.
Kigozi explained that Maganda went ahead to receive the businesswoman and pretended to escort her through the forest. However, he allegedly turned against her, cutting her severely on the head, robbing her of the money she had, and fleeing to an unknown destination.
The victim raised an alarm that attracted Good Samaritans, who rescued her and rushed her to Hoima Regional Referral Hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment.
Officers from Bukwiri Police Station, including scenes of crime officers and detectives, later cordoned off the area and recorded statements from eyewitnesses to aid ongoing investigations.
Kigozi further revealed that Maganda Isaac, who is currently on the run, reportedly has a known criminal record and is out on bail for a previous case of goat theft in his village.
“We appeal to residents of Kyankwanzi Sub-county and the entire Kyankwanzi District who may have information about the whereabouts of Maganda Isaac to inform police immediately if they sight him,” Kigozi said.
