Police Strongly Warns Against March to Parliament Demonstration

In his weekly state of security briefing at police headquarters on Monday, ASP Kituuma Rusoke, the police spokesperson, highlighted that the police are currently aware of ongoing mobilization efforts calling for people to march to parliament.

For several weeks now, social media, especially X (formerly Twitter), has been flooded with calls from various activists urging the public to march to parliament in protest against the rampant corruption among its members.

“Unidentified organizers have circulated placards urging people to gather on all Kampala streets on July 23, but the commencement details aren’t clear,” he explained.

“We strongly warn against proceeding with this march. The police force is issuing a strong warning against attempts to incite violence or breach public order through what we have observed as uncontrolled demonstrations,” he added.

Rusoke further noted that while the right to peaceful protest will always be respected by the force, they will not tolerate attempts to incite public disorder.

“We urge individuals who wish to exercise their rights, such as the right to demonstrate, to work collaboratively with us to ensure their activities are not hijacked by those with criminal intentions,” he said.

The police further called on the public to heed this advice, stating that they are always available to guide people in exercising their rights without jeopardizing public safety.
