The Police and Prisons Civil Rights Union (POPCRU) in the North West says they will await the provincial police commissioner’s decision, guided by SAPS policies.
This after provincial deputy police commissioner, Major-General Patrick Asaneng was found guilty of fraud in the Potchefstroom Magistrate’s Court.

The case related to the unlawful use of state resources in 2019.
Asaneng was charged for the unlawful use of a police helicopter to attend a crime scene at a voting station at Ikageng in Potchefstroom, and a subsequent meeting of the provincial joint operation team in Mahikeng.
He submitted a claim for the use of his car for official duties, while the vehicle was being serviced.
North West POPCRU secretary Johannes Dire, “It’s unfortunate that we don’t have full facts of the matter but we understand that the South African Police Service is a policy orientated department, and therefore if there are other contraventions that might have been made. TGhe policy must be able to guide us moving forward, but we will await the decision of the acting provincial commissioner on this matter before we make any further inputs.”
