The President of Uganda Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has challenged the people of Bunyoro to focus on developing their traditional economic activities and avoid overdependence on the oil and gaSsector.
Speaking at his campaign rally on Wednesday at Masindi Golf Course in Masindi Municipality, the President also warned against individuals spreading gossip about the oil sector instead of mobilizing communities to strengthen sustainable economic activities alongside the petroleum industry.
Some opposition candidates are spreading gossip about oil rather than encouraging people to continue with their daily activities,” he said.
He described the oil discovery as a blessing that will propel Uganda’s economy to another level
God has blessed us with oil which shall help us, but we should not be desperate to get money out of it. For example, crop growing and animal rearing should continue because oil will take only 20 years to be exhausted,” he emphasized.
Museveni noted that countries like Japan and China do not have oil but have grown their economies through manufacturing—particularly vehicle production—based on the skills and hard work of their people.
A similar message was delivered by the Dep. Governor Bank of Uganda, Prof. Augustus Nuwagaba when he visited the oil projects recently he urged the oil sector players to pay much attention to management of public expectations.
Museveni expressed commitment to promoting agricultural mechanization for commercial production, including the provision of more tractors.
He lso said the government will improve cross-border trade by providing a ferry on Lake Albert, which is shared by Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
He further assured the people of Masindi Municipality that they will benefit from the Uganda Support for Municipal Infrastructure Development (USMID) project like other urban areas of similar status.
Rt. Hon. Robinah Nabbanja, the Prime Minister of Uganda, hailed the National Resistance Movement (NRM) government under President Museveni for the tremendous infrastructural development in Bunyoro. She cited the road network, Kabalega International Airport, and the Hoima City Stadium.
