On Wednesday, President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni held discussions with the leadership of the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council (UMSC) at State House-Entebbe.

The delegation was led by the Mufti of Uganda, Sheikh Shaban Ramathan Mubajje, and included Dr. Muhammad Lubega Kisambira, Chairperson of UMSC, Sheikh Obeid Kamulegeya, and Hajjat Sophia Safina Kenyangi, Chairperson of the National Muslim Women Council.

The UMSC leaders expressed their gratitude to President Museveni for his commitment to unity, security, and socio-economic transformation for both Muslims and all Ugandans. They also thanked him for his financial support towards various Islamic activities, including the constitutional review and UMSC elections, acknowledging his instrumental role in these processes.

Mufti Dr. Mubajje highlighted UMSC’s adoption of the Parish Development Model (PDM) and pledged their support for government wealth creation programs.

He also announced plans to launch a coffee and cocoa planting initiative across Uganda’s ten Muslim regions, aiming to plant at least 200 acres in each region starting August 2024. Sheikh Mubajje requested government support for this initiative and for the upcoming Union of East African Muslim Councils Conference in September 2024.

The UMSC also invited President Museveni to be the chief guest at the “UMSC @ 50” event in December 2024, expecting over 2,000 attendees, including more than 40 Muftis globally.

Additionally, they sought his support for the Uganda Women Muslim Council function in October 2024, aimed at empowering Muslim women in Uganda.

In response, President Museveni welcomed the Muslim leaders’ support for the government’s “prosperity for all” programs and stressed the importance of providing a solid foundation and direction for youths, particularly those associated with the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).

He emphasized the need for young people to develop life skills and a strong work ethic, noting that banditry is not a viable path to survival.

President Museveni reiterated the role of religious institutions in promoting economic empowerment and pledged his support for UMSC’s initiatives.

The meeting was also attended by the Secretary General of the UMSC, Hadji Abbas Ssekyanzi Muluubya, among other guests.
