President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, through the former Inspector General of Police, Rtd. Gen. Kale Kayihura, has urged residents of Kisoro District to grow Hass avocados as a way of generating household income, fighting poverty, and reducing alcohol abuse.
Gen. Kayihura made the remarks yesterday on the second day of his tour across various sub-counties in Kisoro District while addressing residents of Mupaka Town Council, Busanza, Nyabwishenya, and Kirundo sub-counties.
He said the President remains committed to supporting community-driven development initiatives.
Gen. Kayihura, who is also the Chairperson of Bufumbira Twifatanye Savings and Credit Cooperative Union Ltd, noted that Kigezi and Karamoja are among the poorest regions in Uganda and stressed the need for economic transformation through the formation of cooperatives.
He added that alcohol abuse has greatly contributed to poverty in the Kigezi region.
Dr. Francis Runumi, a former commissioner in the Ministry of Health, said residents continue to face challenges such as subsistence farming, land scarcity, and limited coffee production. He attributed the prevailing poverty to the cultivation of crops that do not generate cash income.
Dr. Runumi added that President Museveni has encouraged the people of Kisoro to unite and form cooperatives to improve their livelihoods. He noted that although the Parish Development Model was introduced to fight poverty, it has not yet fully achieved its intended impact.
Ignatius Ayebare from the Microfinance Support Centre said the institution is ready to provide grants and loans to support the cooperative’s transformation agenda. He explained that once the union becomes operational, it will attract additional funding from companies, development partners, organizations, and banks.
Laurent Uwiringiyimana, the LC3 Chairperson of Nyabwishenya Sub-county, told residents that his sub-county is ready to join the union to improve community welfare. He also revealed that the sub-county leadership has already started constructing a public toilet at Kamugyemanyi Trading Centre to improve sanitation.
Meanwhile, Louis Bishubeho, the District Councilor LC5 for Kirundo Sub-county, welcomed the development projects, noting that tourism promotion is ongoing in the area. He urged residents to actively participate in all development initiatives.
