By Ambrose KwerondaIn Kanunguwww.mknewslink.comThe National Resistance Movement (NRM) presidential candidate Gen. Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has announced a plan to introduce a fertilizer support scheme aimed at boosting yields for tea, coffee, and cotton farmers in his next term of office.
Addressing residents during an NRM presidential campaign rally at Rwere Playgrounds in Kanungu District, Museveni said the initiative is designed to increase productivity and profitability for farmers engaged in large-scale cash crop production.
Museveni noted that while crops like tea, coffee, and cotton remain central to Uganda’s export earnings, many farmers continue to struggle with low yields due to limited access to fertilizers and other agricultural inputs.
He explained that the proposed scheme would provide assistance grants to farmers, enabling them to access fertilizers at a subsidized cost.
Museveni said that NRM government intends to support farmers so that these agricultural projects become more profitable and by helping farmers access fertilizers, to increase production, improve household incomes, and strengthen national economy.
The pledge forms part of Museveni’s broader campaign message focused on agricultural modernization and wealth creation.
He emphasized that improving the productivity of cash crops would not only benefit individual farmers but also contribute to national development through increased exports.
Farmers in Kanungu District, a region known for tea and coffee growing, welcomed the announcement, expressing hope that the intervention could reduce production costs and improve market competitiveness.
As the campaign trail continues across the country, agricultural support remains a key talking point for the NRM candidate, who says his next term would prioritize programs aimed at transforming subsistence farming into commercial ventures.
