Engineer Patrick Oboi Amuriat, the leader of the opposition Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) party, has abandoned the 2026 presidential bid and announced his endorsement for MP Nathan Nandala Mafabi, the party secretary general, as the FDC flag bearer 2026.

Amuriat made the announcement during a press conference held at Najjankumbi Kampala on Monday, September 30, 2024, where he expressed his confidence in Mafabi’s leadership capabilities and vision for the country.

“After careful consideration and discussions with my supporters, I believe that Nandala Mafabi is the right candidate to lead our party and the nation towards a brighter future,” Amuriat said.

He, however, noted that by endorsing Nandala, it does not mean that other people are not allowed to contest for the Party presidency, as there are systems that govern this process.

“We encourage all those interested in contesting for the party presidency to do so, as provided for in the rules and laws that govern the party,” Amuriat said.

Amuriat further encouraged all the members of the FDC Katonga Faction who are not interested in remaining in Katonga to come back and join FDC, as it is an open party that welcomes everyone.

Nandala Mafabi, known for his strong stance on governance and accountability in FDC, has garnered considerable support among the party supporters.

His endorsement by Amuriat is expected to bolster his campaign as he prepares to challenge the incumbent government.

Political analyst Dr. Sarah Kanyike said that Amuriat’s withdrawal could reshape the dynamics of the upcoming election, potentially uniting opposition forces under Mafabi’s leadership.

“This move could consolidate votes and create a stronger front against the ruling party under Nandala,” said Dr. Kankiye.

She added that the political community is now keenly watching how this endorsement will impact the strategies of other candidates and the overall election landscape as the 2026 presidential race heats up.

“With Amuriat stepping back, many are eager to see how Mafabi will leverage FDC and galvanize support from the already divided FDC,” she added.
