Pride Microfinance Donates to Kitezi Landfill Victims, Offers 5 Bursaries to Candidates of Affected Families

Pride Microfinance Bank has donated a consignment of assorted items to the over 280 victims of the Kiteezi landfill who are currently housed at the reservation camp at Kiteezi Church of Uganda Primary School.
The items that were delivered by the Pride Microfinance team headed by the Executive Director, Edward Nkangi included food items, briquettes, and charcoal stoves. The bank has also offered five bursaries to the victims of the affected families.
“The bank treasures the life and welfare of its customers. We are offering five bursaries to children of the affected families”, said Nkangi adding that the candidates will be selected by the village committee that will forward the names to the bank for direct payment of fees to their respective schools.

The spokesperson of the Uganda Red Cross Society, John Cliff Wamala noted that 80% of the current occupants are children and women, many of whom need more support.
Wamala noted that ever since the tragic incident, they have registered two successful births at the camp. He extended his gratitude to Pride Microfinance Bank for its corporate social responsibility to which he confirmed has helped to soften the resettlement of the over 286 people at the camp.
Wamala noted that although the numbers of victims at the camp have drastically reduced, they still need more support from organisations of goodwill. In attendance were also representatives from the Uganda Police, Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA), Office of the Prime Minister, Uganda Peoples Defense Forces (UPDF), among others.
On his part, the head of Business at the bank, Joseph Fataa extended his gratitude to the Bank`s area branch Manager in Kawempe, Victoria Nankinga for her commitment to serve the affected people and also reechoed on the Bank`s commitment to serve its clients with integrity and commitment.

Kanyemenye Anna, the Acting Local Chairperson of Kitezi also commended the relationship that the bank has with its customers and extended her gratitude to government and other stakeholders for continuously supporting the landfill victims.
Kiteezi landfill is an 8-hectare site located 12km from Kampala city center. Following the tragic collapse of the kitezi landfill, which resulted in the death of at least 36 people, President Museveni issued a stern directive for the immediate evacuation of the affected families living in the vicinity of the landfill.
Since then, a combination of rescue teams from the Uganda police, Uganda Red Cross together with local residents have been working tiresly to retrieve bodies and rescue those trapped under the debris.
