Male Deogratius, popularly known as Omusawo Tintah, a well-known journalist for Hoima Post and Metro FM, has fled Uganda to seek asylum in Canada following a brutal attack near his home.
On the night of April 15, 2024, Male Deogratius was assaulted by unknown assailants at Kubadongo, Salama road, Makindye Division Council, Kampala Capital City Authority. He sustained serious injuries and was promptly taken to Good Samaritan clinic in Makindye for medical treatment.
Reports indicate that Male Deogratius decided to leave the country after receiving threats from his attackers, who warned him to cease his advocacy for human rights and LGBTQ rights on his website, “www.hoimapost.co.ug“. The assailants, who made off with nothing, cautioned him that failure to comply would put him and his family in danger, claiming to possess detailed information about them.
Male Deogratius had previously received threatening messages from unknown numbers, urging him to abandon his advocacy efforts. His decision to flee comes amidst growing concerns over the safety of journalists and activists in Uganda, particularly in light of the Anti Homosexuality law enacted in May 2023, which imposes harsh penalties for consensual same-sex relations and prohibits the dissemination of material promoting homosexuality.
Under the law, individuals convicted of printing, broadcasting, or distributing content deemed to “promote or encourage homosexuality” face up to 20 years in prison. This legislation not only restricts freedom of the press but also poses significant risks to journalists reporting on LGBTQ issues.
Male Deogratius, also known as Omusawo Tintah, is widely recognized for his work as a journalist and entertainment radio presenter. He has demonstrated a strong commitment to advocating for human rights, including LGBTQ rights, despite facing threats and intimidation.
His decision to seek asylum in Canada underscores the challenges faced by journalists and activists in Uganda who dare to speak out against injustice and discrimination. As the international community continues to monitor the situation, Male Deogratius’s case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing struggle for press freedom and human rights in Uganda.
