Rujumba 7s: All Set For National Rugby 7s Series Finale

The National Rugby 7s series is set for a grand finale this weekend with the Rujumba 7s, hosted by Black Pirates RFC at Kings Park Arena, Bweyogerere, on October 5-6.

This circuit, named in memory of rugby legend Henry Rujumba who passed away in 2015, marks the eighth edition of the tournament.

Since its inception in 2016, the Rujumba 7s has seen a mix of champions: Heathens claimed victory in 2016, 2017, and 2023; Buffaloes won in 2018; Kobs triumphed in 2019 and 2022; while Pirates secured their sole win in 2021.

Defending champions Heathens will seek to hold on to their title after their thrilling 12-10 win over Kobs in last year’s final, with Lawrence Ssebuliba being named MVP for the men and Emily Lekuru of Black Pearls taking the honors for the women’s side.

This year’s men’s competition is tightly contested, with Heathens leading the series.

Despite finishing fifth in Mbarara last weekend, they hold a narrow five-point lead over Pirates.

Heathens are aiming for their first National Rugby 7s title since 2013. In the women’s competition, Avengers are in a commanding position, boasting a nine-point lead over Black Pearls and a 15-point gap over Thunderbirds.

A third-place finish at Rujumba 7s will secure Avengers their series title.

Men’s invitational teams for this circuit include Kisubi Pacers, Kuba Eagles, Sailors, and Jaguars, while Panthers and Ewes will feature in the women’s category.
