By Ambrose KwerondaIn Rukungiriwww.mknewslink.comPolice in Rukungiri District are investigating circumstances under which a 35-year-old man committed suicide while in custody at Marumba Police Post, Kanyinya Ward, following his arrest on Monday. The deceased has been identified as Alex Mugarura, a resident of Marumba “B” Cell, Kanyinya Ward, Southern Division, Rukungiri District.According to a police report, on November 10, 2025, at around 6:00 p.m., Kakumu Charles (67), a resident of Marumba “B” Cell, reported a case of theft of a bunch of matooke by his son (the deceased). When the family confronted him, Mugarura allegedly threatened to cut them with a panga. The family fled, after which he reportedly cut down the banana plantation in anger.Police officers from Marumba, led by the Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the post, responded to the incident, arrested the suspect, and detained him at the police post. However, on November 11, 2025, at around 2:30 a.m., the OC Post discovered that the suspect had hanged himself using his T-shirt inside the cell, where he was being held alone.Elly Maate, the Kigezi Region Police Spokesperson, confirmed the incident and told the press that the scene of crime was visited by the Grade I Magistrate (acting as the coroner), the District Police Commander (DPC), and a team of officers, along with a medical doctor who conducted the postmortem examination. The body was later handed over to the relatives for burial.Maate further revealed that the deceased had previously been imprisoned on similar charges involving conflicts with his parents, despite being expected to provide security and support to his family — a situation he described as “very unfortunate.”
