The Rwizi Region Police Commander (RPC), SSP Alfred Bangambaki, narrowly escaped an attack by machete-wielding thugs at his residence in Mbarara City on Sunday morning, fatally shooting one of the assailants during the confrontation.
According to police, SSP Bangambaki and his colleague, Areba Munda, were ambushed as they drove into the officer’s home in Mbaguta Cell, Ruhaaro Ward. Two attackers armed with pangas struck the vehicle, shattering the windows and injuring Munda, who sustained facial cuts from flying glass.
In the ensuing scuffle, one of the assailants was shot dead, while the others escaped on a motorcycle. Security teams have since launched a manhunt and called for reinforcements to track down the fleeing suspects.
Later on Sunday morning, a team led by Mbarara City Division DPC, SP Kenneth Gumusiriza Kabwigo, visited the scene and conveyed the deceased attacker’s body to Mbarara Regional Referral Hospital.
Police say a panga, a mobile phone, and an undisclosed amount of cash were recovered from the dead suspect as part of ongoing investigations.
