SAHRC urges mines to benefit communities in Limpopo

The South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) in Limpopo says mines should benefit local communities.
The commission’s provincial manager, Victor Mavhidula was speaking during the provincial Human Rights Day celebration, on Saturday, at Bakenberg, outside Mokopane.
Mavhidula says mines in the area should contribute by rehabilitating infrastructure and employment.

“It is a pity that this area, where Mogalakwena Municipality is, is hosting the biggest open cast mine, the second biggest open cast mine in the world, but our people are suffering,” he says.
He says the community does not have water and they protest day in day out for service delivery.
“That road is used by trucks from the mining companies everyday but they don’t think of expanding that road for the benefit of our people,” adds Mavhidula.
