Shibiri grilled on use of R70 000 received from ‘Cat’ Matlala

The Madlanga Commission in Pretoria has revealed that there was no transaction for the purchase of alcohol from the credit card of suspended Major-General Richard Shibiri.
Shibiri previously testified that he used his bank account to purchase alcohol worth R17 000 for his thanksgiving ceremony.
Evidence before the Commission shows that attempted murder accused, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala lent Shibiri R70 000 to fix his son’s vehicle.
But the money was deposited in General Shibiri’s son’s account two days before the thanksgiving ceremony.
Commissioner Sandile Khumalo SC slammed Shibiri for providing the Commission with three different versions of his statement on the purchase of the alcohol.
“That’s the third version on the same point. You started by saying you used your ABSA cheque account, you needed money for the thanksgiving. When it was pointed out to you that the cheque account statement does not show that transaction, you then said, ‘oh no, it’s in the linked credit card’. And the Commission went through the effort of obtaining your credit card statement. Now, you are confronted with that statement, you’re changing your version again. You’re now saying it was cash contributions from members of the family.”
