Sibiya defends Matlala’s presence at son’s party – SABC News

Suspended Deputy National Police Commissioner, Shadrack Sibiya, has been challenged over his knowledge of alleged criminal cartel kingpin Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala at his son’s party in September 2024.
Sibiya contradicted his statements about Matlala’s presence at his house, where the party was held.
He has continued giving testimony before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria.
Evidence leader, Adv Adila Hassim asked Sibiya about Matlala’s presence at the party.
“You are aware that Mr Matlala is a service provider and you invite him to a celebration at your home and as a service provider bearing in mind that this is not service excellence awards or those kind of situations, which are formal, professional kind of environments where service providers are, this is a private intimate affair. Isn’t this contrary to the SAPS (South African Police Service) regulation and national instructions that govern how you are to manage conflicts of interest? Because isn’t that a risk? Quite apart from criminality, isn’t this a risk that you made to be seen to be biased in favour of a service provider?”
He responded by saying, “I want to answer it in two-fold, the first one is the fact that I’m a detective and if Mr Matlala is a service provider who works for the supply chain, where they allocate tenders or where he supplies service in the detective space, I would be a little bit cautious in doing that…”
Sibiya adds, “I would apply my mind in having to invite someone that I know is a service provider in the detective space, but the supply chain is a division on its own, which is far from where I am; I don’t even know the people who sit on how tenders are allocated, so I’m far from that space. I know him as a stakeholder in the police, and that being the case, it’s not like it’s the first time it’s happening with Matlala. Moving to the second part and say ‘what happens to the goose must also happen to the gander.”
