Farmers who supplied sugarcanes to Kiryandongo Sugar company have decided to pitch camp at the company office In Kisanja Masindi district over refusal to pay their money by the company.
Johnson Baligonzaki farmer from Rukondwa village Bikonzi subcounty Masindi district says him and his family decided to petition the office of the company to show grievance over breach of contract terms but the company gives deaf ears.
According to Baligonzaki, he supplied sugarcane to Kiryandongo sugar on the 6th of October 2025 on agreement that would get his payment within three weeks from the supply date which could not exceed 2nd November 2025.
He adds that they delivered support documents required including bank statement and account number 1030017029398 post bank Uganda within the very first week after supplying the sugarcanes.
“At the time of painfully deciding to sell my cane 14 month, I had aloan with a micro finance that had reached a stage of selling the entire family land where also the sugarane garden is sitting a situation we would not want to see Baligonzaki stressed “.
Baligonzaki further adds that as A family, they resolved to look for someone to buy their sugarcane other than loosing the entire family land and decided to zeero on Kiryandongo sugar after their agent one Anathan assuring them of payment within three weeks.
Baligonzaki further States that out of pressure from micro finance, they rushed to money lender who gave them a loan of 4 million and they topped up to close business with micro finance business.
” The money lender gave us 4 million with a charger of 22% interest per month which turned to be 4, 880,00= on the 7th November 2025 after entering the second month, the debt now is 5, 953,600= quite above the value of the cane value as per their buying price”.
Baligonzaki says, all the above has been explained to the company agent and several reminders have been made both on phone and having physical visits to office but to their sorrow without a clear date of payment being communicated, all was to be told keep waiting.
” It’s due to our redundancy to meet your obligations, we have resolved to pitch camp at your office until the day you pay us and also inform relevant government authorities to come to our rescue” Baligonzaki tearfully expressed.
Another famer only identified as Sunday says the delay buy the company to pay is worrying adding that she has children at school and failed to pay school fees due to the delayed payment and the children are about to come home for Holidays without report cards over failure to pay school fees.
” See how local people are suffering over their own things we need the intervention of government, this is real foolery we have been consulting sec for the company, on the payment only to be told that the management is working on, today we are not leaving this place let children sleep at home as we sleep here as the security guards for the company until they pay us” Sunday stated.
when contacted for comment on the matter, the agriculture manager Kiryandongo sugar only I dentified as prabakaran says the farmers shall be paid by Monday.
By press time, the farmers had still pitched camp at the company office.
