Sustainability of URCS Should Be Primarily Supported by Ugandans – SG Kwesiga

Since its formation in 1964, the Uganda Red Cross Society (URCS) has been a leading humanitarian agency in Uganda, saving lives, supporting communities, and promoting human dignity across the country.

In light of changing global dynamics, URCS Secretary General Robert Kwesiga has emphasized the need for Ugandans to be the primary supporters of URCS’s humanitarian activities as he stressed the importance of educating the public on the role of URCS in Uganda.

Speaking at the launch of the “Humanity Needs You” campaign at their headquarters in Kampala on Tuesday, Kwesiga highlighted the power of collective effort. He noted that since the public relies on URCS during emergencies, it is essential to have resources readily available for effective response.

“As we launch this campaign, we are reminded of the power of collective effort and the difference we can make if we come together as Ugandans and as people who love humanity. The Uganda Red Cross has created this space for you, come and join us because we are committed to serving the most vulnerable. Join us in this mission,” Kwesiga stated.

The “Humanity Needs You” campaign, set to run for six months, coincides with URCS marking 60 years of serving humanity. The campaign aims to appeal to the general public for support and raise funds for various programs and activities.

Kwesiga noted that while URCS has conducted numerous activities and programs over the years, they have often been constrained by donor resources. Given that Ugandans benefit most from their services, it is necessary to involve them in funding these activities, even with modest contributions.

“In addition to the many opportunities to serve humanity, such as donating blood, health interventions, and response missions, we are also providing an opportunity for those who wish to contribute to sustaining these programs,” he said.

Emphasizing the importance of publicizing the campaign, Kwesiga welcomed partnerships with Vision Group and Nation Media, urging other media platforms to join in promoting the campaign to help save Ugandan lives.

Irene Nakasiita, the URCS Director of Communications, Resource Mobilization, and Partnerships, noted that they intend to leverage the power of media to raise awareness about their interventions and resources as they execute their mandate of serving humanity.

“Join our campaign and contribute towards saving lives. This is what we mean when we say ‘Humanity Needs You,’” she asserted.

The campaign will also involve various activities, including recruiting new volunteers and members, and encouraging people to become voluntary blood donors.
