Uganda since Independence has never had a female president but has had two vice presidents Dr Specioza Wandera Kazibwe and the current vice president Rtd Maj Jesca Alupo.
During elections, several women have contested against president Museveni but they tend to be over shadowed and come from somewhere and go no where, something which sometimes make people think that the female presidential candidates are normally sponsored by President Museveni in his push for women emancipation.

In 2006, Miria Kalule Obote, former first lady, wife of former and deceased president Dr Milton Obote and mother to current UPC President Jimmy Akena contested against Museveni on the UPC ticket. She was the only female candidate and results from the 23rd February 2006 presidential elections showed, she was the last with 57,071 votes after Abed Bwanika who got 65,874 votes.
In the 2011 general elections, the then famous Betty Olive Namisango Kamya now the Inspector General of Government contested against Museveni through her political party Uganda Federal Alliance. She was also the only female presidential candidate and got 52,782 votes. She came fifth in the race after Norbert Mao who also 147,917 votes and is also the Minister for Constitutional affairs in Museveni’s government.TrendingMuseveni Mourns His Fallen Gen Elly Tumwine In Moving Tribute

In the 2016 general elections, Maureen Kyaalya Walube also contested against Museveni. She ran an Independent ticket and she did her campaigns alongside Elton John Mabirizi. She was also the only female candidate. The results from the 18th February 2016 elections show that she came 6th in the race of 8 candidates, she got 40,598 votes just after Prof Vinaceous Baryamureeba who managed to get 51,086 votes.
In 2021, a little known Nancy Kalembe also pulled out her desire to lead Uganda and contested against Museveni, she was the only female candidate. The results from the January 14th polls showed that Nancy Kalembe garnered 38772 votes in a race that was male dominated.
Therefore with Miria Kalule Obote getting 57,071 votes, Betty Kamya getting 52,782 votes, Maureen Kyaalya Walube getting 40,598 votes and Nancy Kalembe also getting 38772 votes while contesting against Museveni, the election results clearly show how Ugandans have been unwelcoming to female presidential candidates during this Museveni regime.
However, former Kasese Woman MP and Leader of Opposition Winnie Kiiza has revealed that Uganda needs a female president. She says Women because of their motherly conduct can handle Uganda and take it greater heights than men who are rough riders.

“We are working towards that, ensuring that Uganda gets a female president. If Uganda got a female president, leadership would be different. Women have a passion in everything in everything that they do, the motherly instincts of women would make them manage this country better than how the men are doing it, men are rough riders”-says Winnie Kiiza
