Some of the country’s labour unions have announced a coordinated programme of action against the crippling cost of living.
This is as global tensions continue to drive local prices higher.
The plan includes the re-establishment of a Nedlac Task Team.
This emerged on the last day of the annual Nedlac Labour School.
With steep fuel price hikes expected on the 1st of April, along with a rise in electricity costs, Congress of South African Trade Unions General Secretary, Solly Phetoe, says the school has resolved to initiate a coordinated joint programme of action against the rising cost of living.
Phetoe says, “We must embark on a national day of action on the cost of living. Workers are trapped in many economic challenges…we will have to take up these critical issues on the cost of living. As you said, on the 1st of April, petrol is coming up, some issues are going to come up, and that’s a trap for workers…there are issues of unemployment and retrenchments that are taking place in the country.”
