Two Brothers Drown in Lake Victoria
The Kiira regional marine police and residents on Tuesday retrieved the bodies of two brothers, who drowned in Lake Victoria.
The deceased are 18-year-old Julius Muwanguzi and Edrine Muwanguzi aged 17 years. They had reportedly gone swimming on Monday along the Lake Victoria shoreline, in Masese, in Southern Division, Jinja City, when they were overpowered by the strong waves.
Hassan Magumba, the head of safety along the Masese landing site says that there are increasing water levels in Lake Victoria and people are unaware of the current challenge and could fall prey to accidents.
Magumba says that marine police personnel normally sensitize lake users to desist from swimming in the lake, however, their warning sirens are ineffective.
He asked Jinja city authorities to enact water safety bylaws regulating access to water bodies.
Amuza Magumba, a fisherman in the area says that they have hired stewards to deter access to the risky points of the lake, however, most people force their entry, resulting in accidents.
