Uganda’s U18 Girls’ National Basketball team, the Junior Gazelles, stormed into the quarterfinals after a thrilling 80-64 win against Nigeria at the ongoing tournament in South Africa.

The victory came after the Gazelles overturned a 16-point deficit, sparked by an impressive 14-0 run that shifted the game’s momentum.

Resty Nanangwe was the star of the show, delivering a dominant 31-point, 10-rebound double-double.

She was supported by Christine Namyalo, who added 21 points, and Modesta Anyango, who contributed 11 points.

Despite being out-rebounded 73-46, Uganda capitalized on Nigeria’s 39 turnovers and secured 32 points off the bench to seal the win.

The Junior Gazelles had previously opened their campaign with a commanding 85-36 victory over Zimbabwe but faced a setback after a 76-53 loss to Egypt.

With both Uganda and Nigeria needing a win to advance, the Gazelles rose to the occasion.

In the other group match, Egypt dominated Zimbabwe 122-27 to finish the group stages with a perfect record.

The Junior Gazelles now join Tunisia, Cameroon, and Egypt in the quarterfinals.

Head coach John Omondi’s side will now look to carry their momentum forward as they eye a spot in the semifinals.
