The United Democratic Movement (UDM) says it has escalated its complaint against Bafana Bafana coach, Hugo Broos to Parliament. The party is accusing oversight bodies of failing to act on alleged racist and sexist remarks made by the South African football national team coach.
The party says it has now written to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Thoko Didiza, for intervention after what it calls delays by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) and the Commission for Gender Equality, to investigate.
The UDM says the matter stems from comments made by Broos in December last year, which the party believes were discriminatory and warranted urgent investigation.
UDM MP Nqabayomzi Kwankwa explains why the party has now turned to Parliament.
“After the continued failure of the South African Human Rights Commission and the Commission for Gender Equality to act decisively and promptly on our complaint against SAFA, and more specifically against Coach Hugo Broos for his alleged racist and sexist statements made in December last year, the United Democratic Movement has escalated the matter to the Speaker of the National Assembly, the Honorable Thokozile Didiza. We have formally requested that the Speaker refer the matter to the relevant parliamentary committees with oversight responsibilities over these institutions,” says Kwankwa.
