Ntungamo MP Yona Musinguzi Trails in Polls After Police Arrest 38 » The Hoima Post –

NTUNGAMO, UGANDA — With preliminary results showing incumbent MP Yona Musinguzi trailing challenger Gerald Karuhanga by a significant margin, a dramatic police operation has cast a harsh light on the aggressive tactics long associated with Musinguzi’s political career.
Early Thursday, Ugandan police arrested a team of 38 men in Ntungamo Municipality and impounded three drone vehicles belonging to the incumbent. The group was found in possession of sticks, tear gas canisters, stones, batons, and other items which authorities say were intended to disrupt the ongoing vote tallying process in the municipality.
“These individuals were organized and equipped to cause chaos and interfere with the electoral exercise,” a police spokesperson stated. “The evidence suggests a coordinated plan to undermine the integrity of the process.”
The incident appears to confirm long-standing accusations from opposition groups and civil society observers that Yona Musinguzi has consistently relied on intimidation and violence to maintain political influence. His tenure has been frequently marred by allegations of thuggery and electoral misconduct.
Meanwhile, early figures indicate a potential political shift. Challenger Gerald Karuhanga, a familiar figure known for his previous parliamentary service and advocacy, is reportedly leading with over 80% of the counted votes in several wards, leaving Musinguzi with less than 20%.
“The people of Ntungamo are speaking clearly. They are choosing peace, progress, and lawful representation over the politics of fear and violence,” a spokesperson for Karuhanga’s campaign said in response to the arrests.
The impounded drones raise additional concerns about potential surveillance and coordinated disruption efforts. The Electoral Commission has commended the police for their intervention and reiterated its commitment to ensuring a peaceful conclusion to the tallying process.
As the nation focuses on the 2026 elections under the hashtag #SpotlightOnUgElections26, the events in Ntungamo underscore a critical narrative: the clash between old-guard intimidation and a populace increasingly demanding change. All eyes remain on the final declaration, which could mark a decisive rejection of violent politics in the municipality.
