Uganda Confident Ahead of Africa Region IV Golf Championship

Team Uganda captain Joseph Cwinya-ai has boldly declared that his team is poised to win the Africa Region IV Championship, which will be held at Kigali Golf Resort & Villas from Friday, October 2, to Sunday, October 6.

The prestigious event is being organized by the Rwanda Golf Union in collaboration with the Africa Golf Confederation and the R&A.

Speaking at the flag-off ceremony on Monday at Uganda Golf Club, Cwinya-ai expressed confidence in his team’s form and experience, citing their readiness to secure victory. “We are ready as Team Uganda; my players are all in good form, and I feel we are good to go. This team has experience, and I believe this will help us win the tournament,” he affirmed.

The Ugandan team, composed of youngster Ibrahim Ssemakula, Joseph Kasozi, Cwinyaai and Uganda Open champion Joseph Reagan Akena, is coached by Flavia Namakula, with Paul Habyarimana (team manager) also part of the travelling contingent.

Uganda previously claimed the Africa Region IV Championship title in 2018 and 2019 but were defeated by Kenya in last year’s final.

Kenya, then emerged victorious with a 12-over-par 864 against Uganda’s 886 in Ethiopia.

This year’s Kenyan team includes Michael Karanga, John Lejirma, Elvis Muigua, and Adel Balala, presenting stiff competition.

However, Cwinya-ai remains undeterred, recalling his leadership during Uganda’s 2019 triumph in Mombasa. “I never lose when I am on the team; I either win or I learn. Losing is not in my DNA,” he confidently stated.

Uganda Golf Union Vice President Anthony Agaba also expressed optimism, believing the team has matured both technically and mentally. “If the boys play to the best of their abilities, which I believe they will, then we will have a chance to emerge top,” Agaba said.

The Africa Region IV Championship includes teams from Burundi, Ethiopia, Kenya, Madagascar, Mauritius, Reunion, Rwanda, Seychelles, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Uganda.

Following the tournament in Kigali, Team Uganda will return on October 7 and immediately begin preparations for the All-Africa Golf Team Championships in Harare, Zimbabwe.
